WhiskyFest + Cold = Bummer!

October 10th, 2008

WhiskyFest San Francisco is tonight. That’s the good news. The bad news is that I got a cold a few days ago and am still trying to kick it. My taste buds are at about 50% right now. Hopefully they’ll improve by this evening.

Anyone else ever have an unfortunate experience like this with regards to whisky tastings and events?

I host a bi-monthly whiskey group called the Tri-Valley Whiskey Society. For two of the 6 meetings we’ve had, I’ve been under the weather. Not fun, can’t taste at all, feel lousy, and getting up for church the next morning is even harder than usual!

My sympathies, John. I’d get an early night and take as much vit C as you can stomach.
Sometimes these things bounce back quickly.
An anti-histamine may assist with clearing the nose too.
Hope it works out for you.

Ugh. That is the worst! I was set to go to a rum tasting with 7 or 8 rums I’d never tasted and I got a horrible cold. I couldn’t smell or taste anything. I still went through with it, but all I could detect was sweetness. I spent the whole time saying, “hmm, this one is slightly sweeter than that one.” It sucked.

Jon, lots of water and aspirin (or other painkiller). And, still, no guarantees. My guess is you’ll be less affected tasting younger, less complex whiskeys. Wood and snot have just never seems to get along with me.

Thanks guys for all the advice. I’ll be doing my best to taste and enjoy what I can.

Hi John, sorry to hear! My first visit to Scotland a few years back I was struck with a massive cold, complete sinus congestion etc, the week before, so I figured I’d be okay a week later, I wasn’t! It didn’t subside until the last few days there, and many many whisky experiences stifled unfortunately, sad indeed. Good luck, drinks gallons of water, make the best of it, and have fun!

Sorry you were under the weather last night. The event was great, and I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to say hello in person. Thanks for organizing it. Great job!

Taste buds are getting there. A couple more days I should be back to 100%. Whiskyfest tasting was a challenge. I could distinguish “this is a good whisky”, or “this is a bad whisky” but identifying subtle nuances was tough.

Thanks guys for the the well wishes.
