Friday’s Pick: Lonach “Carsebridge” 1963

A rare bottling indeed, from this now defunct grain distillery. Very tropical, with a macaroon and vanilla cream foundation. Complementary notes of marshmallow, crème brulee, honey and pineapple. Surprisingly vibrant for a 43 year old whisky and, while expressing sweeter notes, not at all cloying (the grain whisky aspects actually helps here). Soothing and distinctive. Great price, too!

I have a question about a 1963 vintage bottle of Lonach Scotch I received as a gift from a client. It’s not been opened yet however it slightly leaks like the cork top has shrunk. Will the air or the seal cause any taste difference.

If enough of it leaks, the whisky will oxidize and begin to taste dull and flat. This will not occur immediately, but gradually over time.
When this happens to one of my bottles, I open it, replace the cork, and/or drink it.
